MILWAUKEE, WI (July 18, 2007) – Concerned about public health and safety and the FDA’s declining budgets in past years the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD) applauds the action taken yesterday by the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee to increase the FDA’s budget.

Led by the Subcommittee’s Chairman, Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), and Ranking Member, Senator Robert Bennett (R-UT), the Subcommittee proposed providing FDA with $1.76 billion in budget authority (not including user fees) in FY 2008. This amount would fund FDA at a level $186 million (11%) above FY 2007 and $120 million (7.6%) more than the President’s FY 2008 budget request.  The House of Representative’s Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee last Thursday proposed providing $1.7 billion for FDA.

“Senators Kohl and Bennett’s bill represents the most significant proposed increase to the FDA’s budget in recent memory,” said Nancy Norton, President of IFFGD. “Previous years of inadequate funding for the agency have hampered FDA’s ability to effectively monitor the food supply and efficiently approve safe new pharmaceuticals. Both are critical issues for the public and especially for patients suffering from chronic digestive disorders.”

Perhaps even more encouraging than the Subcommittee proposing additional funding was the Subcommittee’s announcement that the funding was a symbol of a new commitment to FDA.

Following the proposed increase, former FDA Commissioner and co-chairman of the Coalition for a Stronger FDA, Mark McClellan echoed the sentiment of patient groups across the nation when he stated, “Senators Kohl and Bennett have taken a historic step forward in protecting our nation’s food supply and ensuring the safety of and access to medical drugs and devices.”
