Nancy J. Norton

MILWAUKEE, WI (March 21, 2006) - Nancy J. Norton, Founder and President of the Milwaukee-based International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders is one of five new members appointed to the Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health (ACRWH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The other new members are: Constance Howes, J.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Women and Infants' Hospital in Rhode Island; Eugene P. Orringer, M.D., Executive Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Susan P. Sloan, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Residency Program Director of Internal Medicine at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University; and Barbara W.K. Yee, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The ACRWH was established to ensure that research conducted and supported by NIH adequately addresses issues regarding women's health. The committee is composed of up to 18 members who are appointed by the NIH director.

Nancy Norton founded the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD) 14 years ago to provide a resource for patients with digestive diseases. She also has been a strong advocate for the need for additional research for functional gastrointestinal problems, many of which affect greater numbers of women. From 2001 to 2005, she served on the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Advisory Council of the NIH. In its release announcing her ACRWH appointment, the NIH stated that Norton's "extensive knowledge in women's issues will make her a valuable asset to the committee."

Based in Milwaukee, IFFGD is a nonprofit education and research organization that addresses issues surrounding life with functional GI and motility disorders. IFFGD helps improve care by enhancing awareness, educating and promoting research into treatments and cures for digestive disorders.
