8th International Symposium on Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

The 8th International Symposium on Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders took place April 17-19, 2009 at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The meeting was jointly sponsored by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Office of Continuing Professional Development in Medicine and Public Health, and the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD), in cooperation with the Functional Brain-Gut Research Group.

This biennial meeting brough together over 300 clinicians and other health care professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and skills for the care of their patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders. Topics discussed included advances in the pathophysiology of the functional and motility gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, the latest “hot topic” advances in understanding brain-gut interactions, gut flora, receptors and drugs, diagnosis and care of patients with functional GI disorders, the influence of genetics, early life, and socio-cultural
factors on the clinical expression of functional GI disorders, and the role of neurotransmitters and receptors in the development of clinical symptoms.
